DATA ACQUISITION
AND ANALYSIS

In the context of land-use and conservation planning, we develop and apply a broad range of data acquisition and data analysis methods, including:

habitat analysis,
optimized land-use zoning,
ecosystem services financial modelling,
literature synthesis and meta-analysis, and
adaptive management design.

Example in land-use planning

MODELLING THE PERFORMANCE OF AN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PORTFOLIO OVER TIME

For New Forests, we helped to develop and maintain financial models for ecosystem services projects (carbon, biodiversity, wetlands, etc.), that forecast investment (outflows) and expected returns (inflows) over time. Sensitivity to deal structures and the integration of risks, both biophysical and non-biophysical, were a key part of work.

Example in policy development

STREAMLINING THE REPORTING OF FOREST-RELATED INDICATORS ACROSS THE UNITED NATIONS

For the UN Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat, we examined the state of forest-related indicator reporting across UN organizations (such as UN-CBD, FAO, UNFCCC, UNCCD, UN Forum on Forests) and other multilateral initiatives (e.g., ITTO), and proposed a number of measures to streamline reporting. A copy of the report can be found here.

Example in policy development

EVALUATING THE VULNERABILITY OF FOREST-DEPENDANT COMMUNITIES TO CLIMATE CHANGE

For the Ouranos Consortium, we developed a method to evaluate the socio-economic vulnerability to climate change of forest-dependant communities in Quebec and elsewhere. The method focuses on community resilience and adaptive capacity. A copy of the report can be found, in French, here.
